GM Wu Shaolin’s Martial Arts Teaching Methods/
by WuKungFu
Hello, everyone. Today I’m here to talk to you about when Teacher Gao took us to learn Sun Bin Boxing 64-Hands from Teacher Wu Shaolin.
At that time, Teacher Gao arranged for Teacher Wu to teach us Sun Bin Boxing in a large meeting area at the National Taiwan University of Sports Stadium.
Before learning Sun Bin Boxing 64-Hands, Teacher Gao had taught us Sun Bin Boxing 32-Hands, 96-Hands, and some of Sun Bin Boxing’s basic skills.
Sun Bin Boxing’s basic skills, such as crushing and smashing in horse stance, splitting in horse stance and bracing palm, were all part of our basic training.
In terms of sanshou, Sun Bin Boxing has One Step, Three Palms, Splitting [with] Low Heel Kick, Carrying [with] Low Heel Kick, and Thrusting Strike [with] Hook Kick. These were the Sun Bin Boxing techniques we trained before practicing our forms.
Back then, Teacher Wu was in my opinion around 60 years old, but his techniques were very quick and agile. As an example, when Teacher Wu was instructing us, he demonstrated a Puck Heel Lifting Foot with a Collapsing Fist, and after jumping back into an Empty Stance Palm Strike, quickly threw a Thrust Strike Hooking Kick, then a Step Up Turn Around into a Single Leg Stance Brush Hand Wiping Palm.
He did this all together in one breath. We felt his movements were very agile, precise, unshakable, and steady as Mount Tai, which we greatly admired.
We were still kids when he was that age, not even 20 years old. Seeing him do it as an old man, I was struck with admiration: [I thought] “It’d be so great if I had such abilities.”
But Teacher Wu’s accent was too thick. Sometimes when he’d speak, most of our martial brothers and sisters didn’t understand what he was talking about, because of his Shandong accent; whereas I, a kid who grew up in a military dependents’ village, comprehended about 60 to 70%. Sometimes I’d also do a bit of translating and explain things. It was really interesting having to often guess what Teacher Wu was teaching and saying.
Teacher Wu’s instruction also included a unique feature: Whenever he taught, he never minced words or talked much. He’d see you were doing an action improperly and directly strike you with a slicing palm. You needed to keep your arm up and support yourself. If he couldn’t smack it down, he’d smile and laugh to indicate that you understood where the correct position was.
Same when he kicked you. You had to bring your palm down, otherwise, he’d kick your kneecap and you’d be in terrible pain.
That’s how he taught, which made you clearly understand the principles behind each action. It wasn’t enough to simply perform forms. So when I learned kung fu from Teacher Wu, I experienced firsthand what it means to “train in martial arts”.
Teacher Wu also often taught us sanda, a lot of the techniques from which also derived from Sun Bin Boxing. He often said, “Renping, throw a punch.”
As I threw one, Teacher Wu did too so our fists collided. My hand immediately retracted as if I’d been electrocuted, because Teacher used Elephant-Trunk Fist.
I deeply felt that there are many hidden secrets within all the various little Sun Bin Boxing techniques. You had to experience it yourself to recognize Teacher was instructing you. So, he didn’t say much, but he made you feel the inner meaning (and applications) behind every action. This is what we especially learned there from Teacher Wu Shaolin.
Sometimes I’d also practice Six Harmonies Staff with Teacher Wu. We had Six Harmonies too, but Teacher Wu’s way was different. He really struck you. He’d stick to your staff and then hit you. You had to keep up and react to him. Then he’d laugh… If you slowed down, he’d smack your head or hit your feet.
Whether training or teaching martial arts, Teacher Wu had another unique feature: He wouldn’t show one move or position at a time; he’d teach a series of techniques and make you repeat them for him.
Luckily Teacher Gao taught us [the principle of] “teach no more than three times.” If you couldn’t do it after the third time, he just didn’t continue, but after watching once or twice, we picked it up. So Teacher Wu was very happy with us and often smiled at us and laughed.
Teacher Wu also had some interesting life habits. Early in the morning, Teacher liked to make a big cup of strong tea while he had a smoke and watched his students.
Sometimes we’d arrive at his home at 5 AM and he’d have a smoke as he watched us warm up. At these times, Teacher would be very happy and smile. He’d frequently peek out to check on us as he prepared breakfast. Then, he’d eat the eggs and steamed buns he made. It’s how he spiced up his life.
So, I’d like to thank Teacher Gao Fangxian for educating us and also thank Teacher Wu Shaolin for his selfless guidance. This is what I have to share with you. Thanks, everyone.
