Biography of Taiwan Movie Star Liu Hao-Yi/
by Zhang Wenxi
Since 1980, in Indonesia’s ethnic Chinese diaspora, the name “Liu Hao-Yi” has appeared numerous times.
Initially, Hao-Yi was a famous Taiwan movie star who was invited to participate in film festivals and to perform on stage. But once she got married in Indonesia, it became her second home.
As a general’s daughter, Hao-Yi grew up in Taipei in an Air Force military dependents’ village. Both her parents have now passed away. If she returned to Taiwan today, she wouldn’t even be able to find her old residence. Her daughters aren’t attached like Hao-Yi is to Taiwan, either. In their hearts and minds, home is in Indonesia.
She was a girl who matured under the strict tutelage of her parents, who left her mark on the big screen, yet stopped acting after marrying far from home, only to be led by fate into the unknown.
That generation of movie stars, the ones popular 40 years ago, are enjoying their retirement now. Although no longer interpreting other people’s destinies, their own life stories are perhaps even more twisted, vibrant, and intriguing.
When Hao-Yi reminisces over her move from Taiwan to Indonesia, there are wonderful moments, pains, pleasures, regrets, ups and downs, and joys and sorrows, which all blend together. Regardless of her particular stage in life, she never ceased in her efforts. She lived up to the moment and always let fate take the wheel, so has felt at peace her entire life, even during the most dire of crises.
Hao-Yi is still in good health and has more energy than the average person because of her childhood martial arts training and the benefits of long-term exercise. Whenever she makes an appearance without make-up in her Asian circle of friends, it remains difficult for the former star to hide her glamorous style.
In the north of Jakarta, the “Coconut City,” there’s a quiet golf community in the middle of a bustling area known as “Pantai Indah Kapuk” ( lit: “Beautiful Beach of Kapuk”). Following her first husband’s passing, Hao-Yi relocated to this area.
In life, each moment has its own precious meaning. Hao-Yi often sits alone there in her apartment, with the fragrant coconut breezes gusting, rain pitter-pattering down onto the banana tree leaves, and a band of mist dancing outside her windows…
Chapter 1: Kung Fu Princess
1. Chinese Martial Arts Association
Liu Hao-Yi became a kung fu movie star and a popular choice for leading roles in martial arts films. Having grown up in Taiwan’s martial arts community, she was one of few actresses adept at real kung fu. “Chinese language cinema has [Brigitte] Lin Ching-Hsia; martial arts cinema has Liu Hao-Yi,” according to one media statement, illustrating her status in Taiwan film history.
She was a contracted Taiwanese actress with China Film Group Corporation. “China Film” consisted of Central Pictures Corporation, together with China Television and the Central Broadcasting Station, also known as the “three central stations”. The then-chairman of China Film, Koo Chen-Fu, was the president of the Straits Exchange Foundation that reached the “1992 Consensus” during the “Wang-Koo Talks”.
Hao-Yi also signed with China Television. However, since she had already joined China Film and her primary focus was on film development, it wasn’t really suitable for her to be overexposed in a TV series, so Hao-Yi refrained from accepting any China Television TV series roles. She instead made guest appearances as an announcer for China Television and hosted a Chinese radio acting program.
She was recruited by China Film because of her acting talent, not her martial arts skills. In 1978, China Film held an open audition and selected Hao-Yi, over four rounds, out of more than 2,000 applicants. The nine accepted applicants received three months of professional training. This was the 8th actor training class held by China Film, and also the one attended by the most participants.
During the actor training, Hao-Yi didn’t reveal her martial arts ability, let alone even think martial arts had anything to do with making movies. On October 5th of that year, nine trainees participated in the final presentation of the one-act play Contact, following which Hao-Yi was signed as a regular actress by China Film.
The group of participants in Hao-Yi’s China Film training course included Zhang Chun-Fang, Su Ming-Ming, Sibelle Hu, Hua Fang, De-Kai Liu, and Hao-Jan Tsui, all of whom became well-known artists. In the one-act play, Hao-Yi and Zhang Chun-Fang co-starred as mother and daughter, and Hao Yi’s performance was well-received by the public.
Not long after signing with China Film, Hao-Yi represented the Taipei City Chinese Martial Arts Association and participated in a charity performance in Taipei City. China Film‘s Vice President Zhang Fa-He was present for the event. When Hao-Yi took the stage, Zhang was really taken off guard.
“Isn’t that Liu Hao-Yi, the actress we just signed? I never imagined she’d be so skilled martially!” Zhang had worried that all the new recruits would only be able to act in literary films!
This discovery by Zhang motivated Hao-Yi to take the path of a martial arts actress and established the future positioning of her image on the big screen.
Hao-Yi was not in the movies for very long: 9 years in total, during which she starred or acted in 12 films, starred in a TV series, and released one vinyl music album.
One song in the album was banned because of its sensitive subject matter, and a legislator even raised concerns about it in Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan.
A very noteworthy point is that, Hao-Yi, who had been commissioned by the Chinese Martial Arts Association and was known as “Kung Fu Princess,” later returned to her original profession, using her crossover strengths to produce, host, and perform in a 13-episode season of the TV-series World of Chinese Martial Arts (a public television production). Hao-Yi brought all the myriad styles of Chinese martial arts to life.
The nickname “Kung Fu Princess” was bestowed upon her by the Taipei Chinese Martial Arts Association. In a letter of commendation signed by Chairman Huang Shan-De that praised Hao-Yi for “promoting the essence of national culture and her extraordinary skills,” she was referred to as “Kung Fu Princess” for the first time. Hao-Yi has participated in countless martial arts competitions and demonstrations and has won many awards. For the 5th World National Martial Arts Competition, she was invited to perform “Flying Rainbow Sword” as well as broadsword techniques, and the skillful, light-hearted performance earned her wide public acclaim. In particular, Hao-Yi has made outstanding contributions to the promotion of Chinese martial arts through her performances in films and overseas appearances.
The first chairman of the Chinese Martial Arts Association was Chen Shou-Shan, the then commander-in-chief of the Taiwan Police Headquarters. Hao-Yi was the executive director. At that time, Taiwan had not yet dropped the word “Province”; there were provincial national martial arts associations and county and city associations, so it wasn’t until later that the Chinese Martial Arts Association emerged as a general leadership organization. Chen, who was a native of Taiwan, traveled to China to fight in the war and was highly respected in Taiwan.
The TV series World of Chinese Martial Arts created a buzz around Taiwan but was also broadcast in the United States, Canada, Central and South America, and many Southeast Asian countries. After Bruce Lee’s Kung Fu films gained popularity, it was the first international video production to systematically introduce the schools, systems, and theories of traditional martial arts, which made tremendous effort to promote Chinese martial arts around the world.
