Taiwan inherited martial arts styles from the two provinces of Fujian and Guangdong (e.g., White Crane, Golden Eagle, Taizu, Shaolin, Arhat, Wing Chun, White Eyebrow, etc.) that all became quite popular. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, a large number of Zheng Chenggong’s (郑成功) civilian soldiers crossed the sea to Taiwan. Following the Zheng regime (1624~1662), the Qing Dynasty placed various restrictions on the interactions people were permitted to have with Taiwan. In addition, the natural barriers in the Strait made crossing the sea rather challenging. Since the martial arts exchanges between China and Taiwan were naturally not as robust as all the commercial trading, the local martial arts in Taiwan ended up preserving more of a “Ming Dynasty style,” which has had tremendous research value. In 1949, due to China’s civil war, both civilians and the military crossed the Strait to Taiwan, brought many northern martial arts styles (such as Long Fist Boxing, Mantis Boxing, Ground Boxing, Xingyi Boxing, Baguazhang, Taiji Boxing, Baji Boxing, Sun Bin Boxing, Pigua Boxing, Yanqing Boxing, etc.), and spread them all over the island.
In 1968, the ROC Armed Forces recruited elites in the martial arts world, including Li Yuanzhi (李元智), Gao Fangxian (高芳先), Sun Shaotang (孙绍棠), Wu Shaolin (武绍林) and others, established the “ROC Kickboxing Research and Development Group,” and created 8-Tang Boxing, 6-Posture Boxing, and Baji Boxing sets, which made up the core of Taiwan’s military kickboxing curriculum, with 12 forms in total.
