“爸爸,我们老家太和属于皖北吗?”刘皓怡问爸爸。
“Dad, was our original hometown of Taihe in North Anhui?”
“是呀,阜阳一带在淮河以北,属于皖北地区。”爸爸说。
“Yep. The Fuyang area is located north of the Huai River. It’s part of the North Anhui region,” her father responded.
皓怡拿出一份当天的《中国时报》给爸爸。台北市举行国术锦标赛,皓怡凭着一套“赤兔赶月剑”,夺得女子组冠军。记者问她祖籍是哪里,她说安徽太和。在第二天的媒体报道中,都称她是“皖北佳丽”,让她颇感新奇。
Hao-Yi took out a copy of that day’s China Times and handed it to her father. She won 1st place in the women’s category at the Taipei City World Kuo Shu Tournament with her performance of the sword form Red Rabbit Chases the Moon. When a reporter inquired about her hometown, she declared it to be in Taihe, Anhui. This made her truly stand out after all the news reports began referring to her as the “North Anhui Beauty“ the following day.
西方人接触中国电影是从武打片开始。李小龙将功夫电影发扬光大,风靡世界。70年代后期,港台武打片开始走下坡路。题材老套,情节了无新意,武打动作多用替身演员。袁和平起用成龙做主角,开创了武打新片种——喜剧功夫片。《少林寺》在大陆实地拍摄,专业武术运动员出演,全部真功夫。成龙电影《师弟出马》和《少林寺》的上映,掀起一波又一波轰动效应。
Westerners were originally introduced to Chinese cinema through martial arts films. It was Bruce Lee who most notably popularized kung fu movies around the world. In the late 1970s, however, due to their outdated themes, unimaginative plots, and ubiquitous use of stunt doubles, Hong Kong and Taiwan-made martial arts films started declining in popularity. Yuen Woo-Ping created an entirely new genre of martial arts movies by casting Jackie Chan as the lead actor: comedy martial arts films. So when Shaolin Temple was filmed in China, professional martial artists were hired who performed authentic kung fu, and the screenings of The Young Master and Shaolin Temple both triggered waves of public opinion.
刘皓怡就是在这样一种背景下出道。她所拍的一些功夫电影,从片名就可以看出是处于这一阶段,如冠以“少林”之名。皓怡主演的首部电影,最初片名叫《师妹出马》,因台湾“新闻局”禁止跟风,不得冠以“出马”,而易名《俏师妹》。
Hao-Yi made her first public appearance against this backdrop. You can tell it was around this time from the titles of some of the films she starred in, like those including the word “Shaolin” in their names. Her first movie was initially entitled “The Woman Avenger,” but since Taiwan’s Government Information Office followed the trend of banning the expression “to head out on horseback” [inferring originally to “riding into battle to slay the enemy,” which had political overtones], the name was changed to “Horse Boxing Killer”.
皓怡出身于武术世家。其祖籍地安徽省太和县有习武传统。抗战期间,毅然投军的刘父,虽然精于驾驶战斗机,却疏于习武。随国军退守台湾,生活安定之后,才重拾武术,传承家风。
Hao-Yi was born into a martial arts family. Her ancestral home of Tahe County, Anhui Province, had a long tradition of martial arts. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, her father, determined to join the army, developed himself into a skilled fighter pilot, yet neglected his martial arts training. He resumed his martial arts education and began passing down his family’s martial arts heritage after the ROC military retreated to Taiwan and life again stabilized.
刘父让子女所拜的师父,是后来成为台湾“一代国术宗师”的高道生。高道生当年也是一名热血青年,1937年5月抗战爆发前夕从军入伍。他来自武术极盛的山东青岛,在军中作为武师,颇有知名度,深得刘父的赏识。
The master whom Hao-Yi’s father permitted his daughter to train under was Gao Daosheng, who became a “1st generation master” of Taiwan. Gao was a passionate young man. In May 1937, he joined the army on the eve of the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War. He was a native of Qingdao, Shandong, which had a robust martial arts culture, and with a reputation as an instructor in the military, was sincerely appreciated by Hao-Yi’s father.
刘父在台北空军眷村的住房有前庭后院。高道生1961年退役,刘父帮助他在自家后院挂牌成立“新生国术馆”。皓怡的哥哥、姐姐都拜高道生为师习武,以“师父”相称。皓怡耳濡目染,6岁就跃跃欲试。师父说,中国功夫讲究柔韧性,宜从小练起。
Mr. Liu’s home in the Taipei Air Force Dependents Village had front and back courtyards. In 1961, after Gao retired, Hao-Yi’s father helped him to establish and hang up the sign for the “Xinsheng Martial Arts School” (aka. “Xinsheng Guoshuguan“) in their own backyard. Her older brother and sister also studied martial arts under Gao and both called him “Master”. Influenced by her surroundings, Hao-Yi had already leapt at the opportunity to train in martial arts at the early age of 6. Master Gao explained that Chinese kung fu emphasizes flexibility, and should be practiced from an early age.
高道生擅长的长拳、螳螂拳和地趟拳,都属于北少林拳法,数百年间,流行于胶东一带。高道生的师父是武林一代名宿王松亭,人称“铁胳臂”,是长拳螳螂门的掌门人。新中国成立后,王松亭率青岛国术馆多名徒众,辗转赴台,以传承中华武术为己任。
He was proficient at Long Fist, Mantis, and Ground Boxing, which are all part of the Northern Shaolin tradition and have been popular in the Jiaodong Peninsula (now eastern Shandong) for hundreds of years. His master, Wang Songting, a highly–reputed martial artist known as “Iron Arm,” was the head of the Long Fist Mantis School. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Wang emigrated with a number of his disciples from the Qingdao Martial Arts Institute (QMAI) to Taiwan, where he took on the responsibility of passing down traditional Chinese martial arts.
高道生师承王松亭,结缘于青岛国术馆。王松亭也曾在皓怡家教习武术,皓怡的哥哥、姐姐称之为“师爷”。王松亭还擅长各种兵器,皓怡练得一手娴熟的双节棍,就是由师父传授的师爷功夫。后来赴海外登台表演,皓怡经常随身携带一副双节棍。
Gao formed a strong bond with Wang Songting at QMAI, but Wang taught martial arts at Hao–Yi‘s home as well. Her older brother and sister called Wang “Grandmaster,” too, who was an expert at various weapons. In fact, Hao-Yi’s mastery of the nunchaku (“nunchucks”) were skills GM Wang passed down through Master Gao. Later, once Hao-Yi began traveling overseas to perform, she could often be seen carrying a pair of nunchaku with her.
当年男演员拍功夫片常用替身,更何况是女演员。因此皓怡的出现,自然被中影当成一块宝。中影虽然负有拍摄“教育片”的使命,但也有走市场的规划,其中包括拍摄武侠电影。功夫片虽处于低潮,但在海外仍有市场。
In those days, movies typically relied on stunt doubles in kung fu scenes, especially for actresses. So, naturally, for China Film, Hao-Yi’s emergence was akin to unearthing a precious gem. Though mainly devoted to “educational films,” they intended to test the market, including by shooting wuxia (lit: “martial heroes“) films. Martial arts flicks had been waning in popularity, but there was still an untapped audience overseas.
随着几部电影的公映,皓怡在东南亚声名鹊起,多国都有“刘皓怡影迷会”。印尼对皓怡来说,本来完全没有概念,随着赴巴厘岛参加亚洲影展、多次获邀在雅加达登台作秀,让她对这个华人众多的国家,有所了解并产生好感。皓怡顶着“台湾女星”、“影坛侠女”的桂冠,频频出现于印尼。她跑一趟印尼,登台表演十几场或二十场,都是个人秀。
Hao-Yi found herself gaining immense fame in Southeast Asia as “Liu Hao-Yi fan clubs” shot up around the world, following the releases of several of her movies. Despite her unfamiliarity with Indonesia, her participation in the Asian Film Awards in Bali, and numerous invitations to perform on stage in Jakarta, allowed her to get to know and develop a deep affection for this country with its large Chinese diaspora. While regularly performing in Indonesia, she graced the headlines as “Taiwan Actress” and “Film Industry Heroine,” and would perform ten to twenty solo performances on stage each time she visited.
每当台湾记者见到从印尼回来的皓怡,都诧异她这么快就把事业重心转移到东南亚,于是无中生有地制造出绯闻。皓怡和作为“星妈”的刘母,看到报道吓一跳,不过也知道是媒体“乱写”博眼球,便一笑置之,并不理会。
When journalists from Taiwan noticed Hao-Yi was making frequent trips back and forth from Indonesia—puzzled by her sudden career shift to Southeast Asia—they concocted a major sex scandal out of thin air. The reports came in as a major shock to Hao-Yi and her mother, Mrs. Liu, her “celebrity mom,” but they knew the media was merely fabricating nonsense to get attention so ultimately just smiled and ignored it.
所谓绯闻男友,完全是捕风捉影,并非皓怡后来的“真命天子”。不过那个时候,她与在新加坡做业务的未来夫婿,也只有一面之缘。皓怡在感情上是慢热之人,当媒体追问感情之事,她回答“现阶段仍以事业为主”,并非搪塞。习武之人直来直去,她心里怎么想,就会怎么说。
Her alleged “sex scandal boyfriend” was a groundless accusation, not the “Mr. Right” Hao-Yi would later meet. Back then, she had no more than a faint acquaintanceship with her future husband, who was immersed in his business dealings in Singapore. But Hao-Yi, in terms of romantic relationships, was always fairly reserved. Not being one to beat around the bush, she asserted, “For now, my career still comes first,” when a reporter asked about her relationship status. Martial artists such as Hao-Yi are straightforward: She said precisely what she thought.
媒体所传的这个男星庄泉利,是一个应该被写入印尼电影史的人物,曾经一度走红港台,是炙手可热的“过江龙”。作为帅哥型的武侠男星,在港台拥有一大批女粉丝,而他本人也喜欢“埋在脂粉阵”(港媒用语)。袁和平想把它塑造成“新成龙”,合作拍摄过一部电影后,了解到他的秉性,大失所望。袁和平说:“如此打星,再花心血栽培也无用。”据说,庄泉利拍片经常耍性子,动不动就跑回印尼,让制作人找不到他。
The rumors circulating in the media involved the famous actor Billy Chong, a character, no doubt, who should be enshrined in the annals of Indonesian film history, who was once popular in Hong Kong and Taiwan and starred in the highly acclaimed River Dragon. As a handsome martial arts actor, he had large female fanbases in Hong Kong and Taiwan and enjoyed getting “buried in the powder” (a HK media expression). Yuen Woo-Ping was eager to develop him into a “new Jackie Chan,” but after collaborating on a film and becoming acquainted with his personality, he had felt majorly disappointed. “Putting more effort into cultivating such a star is pointless,” Yuen lamented. Reportedly, Chong often lost his temper during shoots and would return to Indonesia at random times, making it impossible for the producers to locate him.
庄泉利出生于中爪哇省马格朗市华裔家庭,印尼帮洪拳子弟功夫冠军。1977年赴港发展,以“功夫小子”的形象,出演首部电影《黑带空手道》。到1983年,拍了十多部港台电影。随后,他从港台电影圈销声匿迹,投身于印尼电影界,自成一番事业。
Chong, born to a Chinese family in Magelang, Central Java, was the kung fu champion of the Indonesian Hung Gar Kung Fu Society. In 1977, he traveled to Hong Kong to develop his “kung fu kid” image, where he appeared in his first film, Black Belt Karate. By 1983, he was cast in over 10 films in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Soon after, he vanished from the Hong Kong-Taiwan film scene, joined the Indonesian film industry, and built a solid career for himself.
当皓怡嫁到印尼,成为“陈太太”后,有一次在雅加达一家餐厅,与庄泉利不期而遇。
After Hao-Yi relocated to Indonesia and became “Mrs. Chen,” she once, unexpectedly, had a chance encounter with Billy Chong at a restaurant in Jakarta.
