Martial Proverbs
1. In stillness, be like a mountain, [but] in movement, be like a river.
静如山岳,动若江河。
Jìng rú shān yuè, dòng ruò jiāng hé.
2. If he takes no action, I take no action, but once he takes even the slightest action, I have already acted.
彼不动,我不动,彼微动,我先动。
Bǐ búdòng, wǒ búdòng, bǐ wēi dòng, wǒ xiān dòng.
*Moral: Even at the slightest hint of aggression, the one more adept at reading their opponent’s intention will act first [and thus win].
3. Thousands on the perimeter, and I in the center.
千人在外,我在中。
Qiān rén zài wài, wǒ zài zhōng. (Baguazhang/八卦掌)
4. With moral virtue one can serve people and use martial arts to end [rather than start] wars.
以得服众,止戈为武。
Yǐ dé fú zhòng, zhǐ gē wéi wǔ.
5. Before learning a punch, learn to sit in horse stance; [and] before learning Kungfu, learn to heal yourself.
未学出拳,先学扎马;未学功夫,先学跌打。
Wèi xué chūquán, xiān xué zhāmǎ, wèi xué gōngfū, xiān xué diēdǎ
*Moral: Before you can really make progress, first study the basic principles that martial arts are rooted in.
6. Broadswords and Straight Swords Remove the Shackles of Unequal Treaties, Spears and Staffs Defeat the Imperialist Aggression.
用国术的刀剑斩断不平等条约的束缚,用国术的枪棍,打倒帝国主义侵略。
Yòng guóshùde dāojiàn zhǎnduàn bùpíngděng tiáoyuēde shùfù, yòng guóshùde qiāng gùn dǎdǎo dìguózhǔyì qīnlüè.

*A famous May Fourth Movement slogan.
